TRANSFORMATION

Now with over 30 years of technology thought leadership and best practice development, Comtel’s beginnings feel a millennia away. We started with a single ideal, “drive value to customers and wow them in the process”. In the first season of business it was in helping clients gain the exponential benefit of single source leadership (and accountability) by having one vendor own the physical layer, communication platform, dial-tone service, internet, WAN, and security with the expertise and processes that fully integrated the design, migration, and ongoing support phases. Today that doesn’t seem that innovative, but very few were doing it 30 years ago.

Coordinating all of these technologies, services, providers, and subject matter experts inspired the development of a codified way to intelligently evaluate and migrate all of these solutions and activities. This led to our next season of breakthrough, our proprietary audit software and the best practice “Migration Science”. 20 years later we still find our audit software relevant in giving technical and financial decisionmakers a mechanism to articulate back and forth between the two perspectives. To this day, it remains one of the most highly effective ways to shop. And of course, now more than ever, migrations remain the riskiest and most difficult stage of the technology lifecycle. Hence the need for and appreciation of a scientific approach to technology transitions.

Our success in making raving fans of clients, particularly in these areas where we held a great deal of subject matter expertise, yielded opportunities to stretch into areas where clients needed our management and evaluation expertise, despite us not necessarily having technical familiarity with the products. These experiences over the last several years spawned what we believe to be the simplest and yet most disruptive innovation yet. Help clients procure the expertise they needed and fund it through formerly lost service provider sales commission dollars (clients previously typically received little to no value from).

TechTrust™ was born. A client could fire the salespeople and reclaim an average of 15% of their IT budget. As their broker, we receive these sales commissions from their providers, keeping a much smaller broker fee which allows us to manage the rest of the monies like a trust. We then distribute them on behalf of clients as they see fit, to procure, incent, and align the talent and vendors they value. Now, we spend more of our time receiving praise from clients and vendors alike, thanking us for helping them get better results with less effort.

Bob Schubert

Bob Schubert

Chief Executive Officer

Bob founded The Comtel Group in So. Cal., originally as Westec Communications, in 1989 to avoid getting a job after college. He is most easily recognized for his fascination with ideas, so studying Business & Economics at UC Davis fed his appetite for creating a business that was innovative and drove real value to its clientele. In the early years “Comtel” helped organizations evaluate and implement communications platforms and related services to drive greater: internal productivity, revenue, and brand. However Bob always took his commitment to driving business outcomes and value extremely personal, so when multiple clients came to him with problems related to their large technology and telecom service providers, he was on a mission.  One of Bob’s greatest contributions to the technology industry was developing an audit software that empowered business and IT leaders to evaluate any technology that an organization could consume from a design and cost perspective. This ultimately laid the foundation for the industry gold standard, “Migration Science”, which enables those same leaders to take the phase of technology which poses the greatest amount of risk (migration) and reduces that risk by 80% or more. This became one of the pillars of SmartProcure™ which has received praise around the industry and the globe. More impressive is Bob’s co-inventing the industry disrupting TechTrust™.

Bob, can be found on weekends with his wife Kim, and grown children Katherine and Jack playing board-games, reading, listening to political and economic experts, watching sports, cooking together, and sneaking in some time on the laptop and pondering ways to transform the technology industry.

Aaron Brown

Aaron Brown

President

With over 25 years as an entrepreneur, executive, coach, and keynote speaker, Aaron has led transformation for dozens of multimillion-dollar organizations and thousands of individuals. Aaron is known for his passion and commitment to helping create positive transformation for everyone he engages with. Newly minted as the President at the end of 2019, he’s been with The Comtel Group for more than a decade. Aaron’s leadership has, and is, helping transform Comtel’s culture into a place where people and innovation thrive. One of Aaron’s major contributions to the technology industry was co-inventing and introducing a new service category, TechTrust™. This not only set the standard for technology procurement and consumption, but it also won Aaron, among other awards, The Channel Companies’ “Top Midmarket IT Vendor Executive” in 2017, and Comtel “Best Solution Provider”, as voted by the largest gathering of midmarket senior IT leaders in the U.S., multiple years in a row.

Aaron was formally educated at Cal State Fullerton, where he received a Physiology degree. He grew up and still lives in So. Cal. with his wife Julez, and four children; Naomi, Zoe, Levi, and Chloe, where aside from loving God, each other, their community, great food, fitness, sports, the beach (and anywhere else outdoors), you will find him an absolute goofball attempting to make his family and others laugh or smile whenever possible.

Samuel Singer

Samuel Singer

Director of Solution Architecture

As a life-long learner, Sam has been a student of many disciplines. As a curious and future-facing explorer, many of those disciplines have been technologically oriented, including his degree in game software development. Sam grew up playing Dungeons & Dragons, which not only helped him transition into computer sciences (via a highly-related degree track), but it also developed a well-honed ability to mathematically optimize configurations to deliver specific results. He’s leveraged that skill at Comtel since 2007 to optimize several hundred unique client environments.

Sam has also developed numerous formats to streamline the gathering and sharing of the data you use to drive your business decisions, including his contributions to our proprietary auditing software. He has also sat in every operational and sales seat in the business, even having done one tour as our operational manager, and a second as just our IT manager. Sam is third member in the trio who co-created TechTrust™. Sam still spends most of his time architecting solutions for complex situations, but he also spends a lot of his time building best practices for new technologies, including Comtel’s SDWAN and Network Security wrappers.

Paul Wilburn

Paul Wilburn

Director of Service Delivery

Originally from So. Cal. Paul spent the first twenty years of his career on the client-side, and as the first IT employee for a national leader in the automotive industry, he grew a department that managed both Information Technology and Retail Automotive Digital Marketing for 16 locations and over 1600 users 24x7x365. As the senior IT leader, he ensured the organization fully leveraged technology to empower consistent achievement of their KPI’s year over year. Between building and maintaining an IT program from the ground up, and many consulting engagements Paul acquired a wealth of insight into what organizations and IT leaders require to be successful.

Gallup’s StrengthFinder says he’s a superb “Arranger” and outstanding at “Individualization” which allows him to meet people where they are at, and take the available resources and make it all fit. Between his natural strengths and his experience coupled with his quiet, disciplined approach, since Paul joined Comtel in 2015 he consistently leads a team that delivers migrations and support services that turn our clients into ‘raving fans’. When Paul is away from the office, he and his wife enjoy traveling and visiting with many of their good friends.
